How to Apply and Join Kaiser Permanente?
Getting hired at Kaiser Permanente is a structured process designed to identify candidates who are both technically qualified and a strong cultural fit. This guide walks you through each stage, from your first application to your first day on the job.
Step 1. Creating a Candidate Account
- Visit the Kaiser Permanente Careers site and create a “New User” account. This account serves as your gateway to the KP job portal, allowing you to track applications, receive notifications, and manage your profile efficiently.
- Note: External candidates do not have an NUID yet and must register using an email address and password created during account setup. Internal candidates, however, log in using their NUID.
- Use specific keywords, job titles, or job numbers to locate roles matching your skills. Filtering by “Area of Interest”, department, or location can narrow down hundreds of postings, saving time and ensuring relevance.
- Before clicking “Submit”, tailor your resume to match the Basic Qualifications outlined in the posting. Kaiser Permanente’s applicant tracking system (ATS) filters applications based on these requirements; missing keywords can prevent a recruiter from ever viewing your file.
Step 2. The Screening Phase
The screening phase at Kaiser Permanente is the first step in evaluating your qualifications and fit for the organization. It combines resume review, assessments, and recruiter interactions to ensure candidates meet both technical and cultural expectations.
- Resume Review:
A Talent Acquisition Professional checks your resume for relevant experience, skills, and alignment with Kaiser Permanente’s mission of patient-centered care. Ensure your KP Connect profile or submitted resume is up-to-date. - Pre-Hire Assessments:
Some roles require online tests, such as typing tests, behavioral evaluations, or clinical simulations. These are pass/fail and should be completed promptly in a quiet, distraction-free environment. - Recruiter Screening Call:
A 20–30 minute call to verify your experience, discuss salary expectations, and confirm your interest in the role. This is also your first chance to make a professional impression.
Tip: Pay attention to details, complete assessments carefully, and communicate clearly—this phase ensures both skills and cultural fit for KP.
Step 3. The Interview Phase
Once you successfully pass the screening stage, candidates move to the interview phase, where Kaiser Permanente evaluates both technical competencies and cultural fit. This stage is critical for assessing how well you can contribute to KP’s integrated, patient-centered care model.
- Manager or Panel Interviews: Candidates meet with the Hiring Manager and possibly a panel of peers (video or in-person) to evaluate skills, teamwork, and alignment with Kaiser Permanente’s patient-centered mission.
- Behavioral-Based Interview (BBI): Uses the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to assess problem-solving, decision-making, and workplace behavior.
- Peer Review (Clinical Roles): Clinical or physician candidates may have additional peer evaluations to confirm fit with team culture, workflows, and quality standards.
Step 4. The Offer Phase
Kaiser Permanente’s hiring process is structured to ensure candidates meet both technical qualifications and cultural alignment with the organization’s mission of integrated, patient-centered care. From portal access to onboarding, each step is designed to evaluate skills, experience, and fit, while keeping applicants informed and prepared.
- Verbal Offer: A recruiter contacts you to present the role details, including position title, pay rate, benefits, work location, and proposed start date. This is your first formal confirmation that you’ve advanced through the hiring process.
- Written Offer: You receive a formal offer letter via email, which must be electronically signed to activate onboarding, payroll registration, and system access through KP Connect.
Step 5. Pre-Employment & Onboarding
Kaiser Permanente’s pre-employment and onboarding process verifies qualifications, health requirements, and background compliance. It also sets up Kaiser Connect access, payroll, and benefits for new hires.
- Background Check: Candidates submit information for verification of criminal history (typically 7 years), education, and professional licenses or certifications. This ensures compliance with KP policies and regulatory requirements.
- Drug & Health Screening:
- Drug Test: Screens for substances such as amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, and opiates.
- Health Verification: Confirms required vaccinations (e.g., MMR, flu, TB) for healthcare roles.
- Final Confirmation & Orientation: Once all checks are cleared, candidates receive their official start date and instructions for New Employee Orientation (NEO), including kaiser connect access, payroll setup, and benefits enrollment.

KP HR Connect Portal
KP HR Connect is a web portal for Kaiser Permanente employees to use for human resource management. The portal offers features, services, and communication channels between HR and other departments. The Kaiser My HR portal allows employees to manage their benefits, pay, and other HR-related information in one central location.
Through the KP HR Connect portal, employees can access HR-related information and software directly through the company’s intranet or web portal.
